Why is prison listed on my travel page? My trip through the City of Atlanta and the State of Georgia's correctional system was one of the most enjoyable trips I've ever taken. I highly recommend it to anyone, but be sure not to go on Friday (fish for dinner.) I don't have any pictures but one day I'll add my prison diary.

McDonald's Logo

Another non-traditional vacation, but after reading In Search of Excellence, I took a few weeks to examine first hand the applications of the principals described in this business classic. I was pleased to note how well McDonalds did follow it's program of excellence, both in uniformity, training and management.

If you do decide to take a "corporate vacation" be careful about where you decide to go. Do your homework!!! Don't just go to any major fast food restaurant, go to one who you know has strong corporate principals that you want to view in action. After selecting a chain make sure of the store you are choosing. Visit them first. Make sure you know if they are a corporate store or a franchise. If they are a franchise (and you are interested in a franchise organization) find out if they are one of the larger franchise holders. Also, find out how busy they are, you don't want a store that's over crowded.

The McDonalds I worked at was the second largest in Texas, a corporate store, two stories tall. But, it was deserted after lunch so (as a promising new employee) I was allowed to watch and learn all the procedures and see how the information system worked, both computerized and traditional paperwork. One final note: Don't limit yourself to fast food or restaurants. A wonderful vacation could be had (for example) studying unions with United Parcel Service.

More Traditional Vacations

New! I've put ALL of the photoessay postcards from my trips with Demaris (both long and short) together on a sub-page of my publications page. Check it out here. Note these pages do not have any of the site security features.

I have taken 3 trips around the country, "hoboing" as Heinlein would refer to it. Once I had a 45 day Greyhound Ameripass, just after getting off of active duty in the Army. The other time I drove my Dodge Omni anywhere & everywhere just after leaving Egghead Software.

The third trip was not hoboing it was a moving trip as Demaris (my then girlfriend, now wife) and I moved to Oregon to attend graduate school. We did take it nice and slow (about 24 days total.) Parts of it were a science project as we were equipped with a digital camera, a laptop and a national internet service provider. This allowed us to send daily postcards of our trip to the 30 someodd people who were interested. The postcards sort of became a travel diary of the trip. If you'd like I've added a basic link page to the 24 postcards. Note: these pages are VERY BIG (around 3-5 Meg each) and there are no security features. Also, the quality of the pages is not up to a proffesional standard. I've left them the way I sent them, my only excuse for the poor design is that this was done while I was on vacation and I was trying to spend as little time as possible doing HTML/image work.

I found I liked cities. I'd spend from a day to a week wherever I was, going to where the weather was nice and theyouth hostels had space. Also, I found I could have a social life through my interest in Hashing(a running group with a drinking problem) and The Rocky Horror Picture Show (see my various interests page for information on these.)

On these trips I managed to run with about 35 hashing groups and perform with almost every major Rocky cast. I spent the rest of my time meeting people, taking odd jobs if at all possible and trying to get the feel of each city.

My list of my favorite North American cities:
Vancover: The prettiest city I've ever seen. Mountains, beaches, rivers, islands, good air, nice people.
Seattle: Great climate. Incredible scenery, and a very relaxed yet motivated populace.
Orlando: An awful place to live but it has Walt Disney World the greatest place on earth. That and all the stuff that's sprung up around Disney makes for a city with more to see and do than anywhere. Stay on the beach at Cocoa Beach when visiting. It's cheaper, the rooms are nicer, the beach is quiet and pretty and it's only an hour to Orlando.
Las Vegas: Most of the world doesn't like Vegas. However, Vegas is one of my favorite places and I don't even casino gamble! What I do like is lots of pretty lights, exciting entertainment everywhere you look, amazing people watching, good buffets, and a 24 hour city. Vegas is like Disney for adults.
Atlanta: The streets of the city are paved with gold. It's amazing how after travelling and then coming back to Atlanta, just how high the general standard of living is.
San Francisco: I lived in Montery, when I was in the Army. San Francisco has an incredible array of flavors and cultures. That and the weather in Palo Alto is perfect. The Montery Bay area is gorgeous as well.
Asheville: The most civilized small town in America. They have incredible restaurants, the freshest mountain air I've ever breathed, and temperatures are temperate in the summer (unlike the rest of North America outside of the West Coast.)
Austin: Austin is a great town - a real surprise if you've visited the rest of Texas. Austin has a much more temperate climate (still gets hot but not brutal.) It has a great nightlife and the populace is well educated and friendly.

No matter where you go there you are.
